thin lips

Thin lips: what are they?

Lips play a crucial role in our appearance and expression. Some people have naturally thin lips, while others see their lips become thinner with age. The Cupid’s bow can gradually disappear, causing the upper lip to merge with the lip itself.

Why do I have thin lips?

There are several reasons for thin lips:

  • Natural aging: With age, cell renewal diminishes, resulting in a loss of lip volume and duller color.
  • Smoking: reduces collagen production, drying out the skin around the lips. Nicotine clogs blood vessels, affecting cell renewal.
  • Sun exposure: accelerates the natural aging process. We therefore recommend the use of sun protection for skin and lips.

How can I tell if I have thin lips?

Everyone has a unique lip shape. If you notice that your lips have lost volume or that their color has become duller, they may be thin.

Why do lips become thin with age?

Aging leads to a decrease in collagen and elastin production, which affects skin tone and volume. The lips, being a delicate part of the face, are particularly affected by this phenomenon.

What dermo aesthetic treatments are available?

When it comes to increasing volume or redefining thin lips, several non-surgical aesthetic products are available. These products are administered by injections using fine needles to introduce the product into the skin or subcutaneous tissue, depending on the product and the desired effect.

Volumizing and filling injections:

Volumizing injections are a technique for injecting hyaluronic acid-based filling agents to increase lip volume and fill wrinkles. Volumizing injections are often used to naturally plump up the lips and give them a fuller appearance. Volumizing injections are also used to fill wrinkles around the mouth, such as smoker’s lines.

  • Juvéderm Ultra and Juvéderm Volbella: These hyaluronic acid-based products are specifically formulated to increase lip volume and improve lip contours.
  • Restylane Silk and Restylane-L: Also hyaluronic acid-based, these products are designed to provide subtle lip augmentation and smooth fine lines around the mouth.

At Clinique M Rockland, Dr Larue and her team promote the use of Restylane products. They enable us to offer our patients a natural result. It’s essential to favor the use of a quality product over a cheap one. We consider that the Restylane range offers us the best value for money on the market.

  • Belotero Balance : Another hyaluronic acid-based product suitable for filling fine lines and slightly increasing lip volume.
  • Restylane : Depending on formulation and injection technique, Restylane can also be used as a volumizing lip injection.

Neuromodulator injections:

Neuromodulators work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contraction, helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Botox : Derived from botulinum toxin type A, Botox can be used around the mouth area to relax certain muscles, giving lips a slightly “plumped” appearance. Its effect on the lips is subtle.
  • Dysport : Dysport is another neuromodulator commonly used to reduce the appearance of lip wrinkles.

It is essential to consult a qualified professional to determine the most appropriate product and obtain the best possible results.

Surgical treatments

At MRockalnd, we favor the injectable approach, but there are other treatments that are much more invasive and require surgery.

Lipofilling or fat grafting

This technique involves taking fat from a part of the body (such as the abdomen or thighs) and injecting it into the lips. It’s a more permanent option than fillers, but requires minor surgery.

Lip lift:

This is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the upper lip by removing a strip of skin under the nose. This gives the illusion of fuller, younger-looking lips.

Other non-invasive treatments with more subtle results

Laser therapies
Certain laser procedures can stimulate collagen production in the lips, making them fuller.

Exfoliation
Although temporary, regular exfoliation of the lips can increase blood circulation, giving lips a slightly fuller appearance.

Topical products
Some balms and glosses contain irritating ingredients (such as capsicum or caffeine) that cause slight inflammation of the lips, making them temporarily fuller.

Lip massages
Regularly massaging the lips can increase blood circulation, giving a fuller appearance.
